Honestly, I wasn’t really sure where I wanted to begin with this post, because there’s so much going on in this faecal tornado that’s swept through the palaeo-blogosphere as of late. And it just keeps getting worse and worse. Every time something new pops up, it just adds another level of filth to the pile. I’ve had to keep extending this whole post as I was typing, drama kept unfolding that quickly. It’s actually fucking incredible.
The name of this turd whirlwind in question is Carlos Albuquerque.
A lot of
people that might read this have most likely already heard something about him
already, either from other tumblr post, his DeviantArt pages, his blogs etc. Or perhaps he’s messaged you directly with malicious intent. Whatever. I aim for this post to not only give me an opportunity to share my experiences with this particularly troublesome member of the online palaeontological community, but to serve as a compendium of his actions towards other members of this community, and most importantly, a warning. A warning to those that don’t know who he is yet, or
don’t know what’s been going down as of late. A warning to stay as far away
from this absolute psychopath as humanly possible.
Before I
continue, I want to make a disclaimer: The links that I have posted throughout this
anecdote consist of content which are either hosted in public space, by Carlos himself or by others involved in the drama his toxic behaviour has caused; or private conversations between fellow community members which I have been granted permission to host here.

I was part of a modding team that had an extensive list of Cretaceous themed
animals planned out as one ginormous mod pack. At the time, we had listed around 50 animals or something.
It was ambitiously large, and has since become a ZT2 community meme with how fucking
long we spent on it. We had a lot of shit on our plate. There was a lot of
community drama, content leaks, inter-site flame wars bla bla bla, another post for another day perhaps.
But in 2010, the faecal tornado sweeps in for the first time. Carlos Albuquerque appears in
the community for the first time, under the usernames Taniwha then Simoedosaurus.
Other
than generally being an ass towards other people in the community, when it came to my
modding team and I, he had one goal in mind:
He wanted us to make some kind of choristodere for ZT2, I vaguely recall it being a
Champsosaurus specifically. I really don’t care.
Why do
we know this? Because he would hound and harass us about it CONSTANTLY. We made
it absolutely clear to everyone that followed us that we already had a full list of about
50 animals planned, we had no time or space for new content, let alone content
that none of us really knew anything about at the time. So we shooed him off.
But he always kept coming back, harassing us, THREATENING US to make one
specifically for him.
The
community back then got tired of him harassing people and being a dick to others,
but the final nail in the coffin for him back in the day was when he shock
spammed my forum with pornographic
content. At the time, it was one of the biggest forums in the community as well. So he was swiftly banned from basically everywhere in the ZT2
community at the time, and that was the end of that…
Except
not, because he ran away to DeviantArt, where he’s known rather widely among
the paleocommunity as JohnFaa (despite not using that old account for some time), and wrote a rather disturbing rape
fic about what had transpired:

just clogs up the actual palaeontology subforum as if he was dumping a new
paper, news article, or actually peer reviewed work. Probably for attention, or
some sense of self importance. I don’t know. One topic that made me laugh was that he made an announcement of what he plans to talk about in the coming year. Plot twist, nobody cares:

despite the only two genera not represented by a single tooth or tiny jaw
fragment demonstrating that they were gliders more akin to an insectivorous or

that’s not a debate I myself have taken part in to any major lengths. But it has
been shot down repeatedly among the extended online palaeo-community, and this
does get relevant later on.
However,
next major encounter begins is with THIS:

haven’t checked the link earlier, or these two just now, what was this idea?

Velociraptor mongoliensis, my dudes, could fly like a majestic FUCKING eagle!
I am
telling you, I have never had such a weird mix of absolute joy and
genuine concern for anyone’s psychological health in my life. It was in that very moment that I finished reading
that blog post that I knew that Carlos had officially lost his marbles. This
was one of those debates that I would remember forever. I’ve had debates online
against people that hypothesised that C. megalodon was a giant leopard shark,
people that supported the Dougal Dixon unicorn-pachycephalosaur hypothesis, the
list goes on. But this magnificent read took the fucking cake and ate it. The
second I jumped into that topic, I knew I was going to be in for a ride.

Where I
come in is in the Round Table thread itself. Not gonna lie, I was pretty
aggressive on the counter argument, partly because the mental gymnastics Carlos had
to perform to get from Confuciusornis and Archaeopteryx burst flight mechanics
to Velociraptor passively soaring like an eagle or condor should have earned
him the gold medal in the 2016 Olympics, but mostly because of Carlos’s CLASSIC
debate strategy of… Not engaging in the fucking debate?
Like, at
all.
There
was a DISTURBINGLY clear disconnect between what everyone else
was reading and responding to throughout the thread, and Carlos’s approach to the subject. At
first it was just poor debate etiquette – I’d spent the first 4 pages of the thread countering his blog with statements
or at least concerns about the aerodynamic properties (or lack thereof)
demonstrated or even tested in Velociraptor, and how he expected everyone to assume that the
logic applied to animals between a few hundred grams to a full kilogram would
not only suitably apply to an animal at least 15 times heavier, but exceed the
specified requirements to make passive soaring viable, only for him to dismiss
all of those concerns and lock down on “I already explained the muscle anatomy,
why is everyone asking about it!?!?!”, even though literally nobody did. Nobody was asking about flight muscle groups. So I
changed up tactics after it was clear that a verbal debate was going nowhere
because everything was either (in his mind anyway) pre-explained or not worth
addressing.
I took
agreed upon estimates on weight and hypothesised wingspans for Velociraptor,
and ran a few calculations, all of which are available in page 4 of the topic
thread, but I’ll post the final diagram here for convenience (and, not gonna
lie, the jokes):

side note, it is perhaps worth pointing out that not even hummingbirds abide by
that feather-arm length ratio. In fact, they still have twice as much arm

had to work with there, I didn’t even say the word “holy fuckballs” once!).

wait, there’s MORE!
It was
around about the time of the events that took place in page 6 of the thread
when he somehow manages to find his way into my ZT Discord server. I to this
day don’t know how he got the link to that server in the first place, don’t
really care all that much, it was made to be a public server where anyone’s
welcome. But the the debate flares up once again, and it’s the same cycle of
bullshit where we practically had to spam the same question over and over
again in an attempt to get a response from him.
But instead, he chose to completely detach from the debate and either do the same “I
already explained everything” type response, or give some spiel that we’re
oblivious to the inevitable collapse of our server.Then out of fucking NOWHERE, he
starts accusing us of being cowards, racists and claims that we DOXXED HIM (!?!?!?)
(Hence the disclaimer earlier!) and threatens to have our server reported and
shut down. He then found his way onto my friend’s PRIVATE SERVER and lurked
around there for a bit, presumably hoping to stir up shit or find something

Either
the threat was a bluff or the reports were deemed false and a waste of time.
Given that he had spent the entire forum thread reporting me to the staff who
determined that my hands were clean, I’m more inclined to believe he tried and

I could ramble about that debate for ages, it was such a fucking mess that
descended from countering a dumb hypothesis to being outright accused of hate
speech, and actual criminal activity and privacy violations because we actually
could not see things his way (quite literally as I pointed out in page 6 of the

covered in that area within the topic itself, so I’ll move on. Because the rabbit hole
only gets deeper.

bullshit. It was pretty obvious that not only did he have a presence beyond his
DA and ZT2 community accounts at all, but his reputation across the
palaeo-blogosphere was well established for quite some time.
At this
point I can hardly keep up with the dirt that keeps popping up. It was only a
month after the whole Flying Velociraptors fiasco where he started threatening
to sue WIKIPEDIA via twitter:

relevant again. Carlos found himself in multiple edit wars against the
Wikipedia staff (under the guise of Falconfly), where he was repeatedly trying
to upload commissioned artwork without the artist’s consent, or trying to edit

blog. To justify his edits, he’s attempted to use his own books (YES, BOOKS!
Notably, one NON-PEER REVIEWED book on volaticothere flight) as citations to support

sockpuppet accounts to get back in and either continue the edit war, or threaten
and harass people AGAIN before being banned AGAIN. At which point he claims
he’s being censored and that it’s some vast conspiracy against him.
From here
it came to light that his books are loaded with artwork he has commissioned
from numerous online paleoartists, at least two of which (Sheather888 and
PLATOSPLEEN on DeviantArt are those I’m aware of) were either underpaid or not paid at all for their work,

telling you, I have never had such a weird mix of absolute joy and
genuine concern for anyone’s psychological health in my life. It was in that very moment that I finished reading
that blog post that I knew that Carlos had officially lost his marbles. This
was one of those debates that I would remember forever. I’ve had debates online
against people that hypothesised that C. megalodon was a giant leopard shark,
people that supported the Dougal Dixon unicorn-pachycephalosaur hypothesis, the
list goes on. But this magnificent read took the fucking cake and ate it. The
second I jumped into that topic, I knew I was going to be in for a ride.

come in is in the Round Table thread itself. Not gonna lie, I was pretty
aggressive on the counter argument, partly because the mental gymnastics Carlos had
to perform to get from Confuciusornis and Archaeopteryx burst flight mechanics
to Velociraptor passively soaring like an eagle or condor should have earned
him the gold medal in the 2016 Olympics, but mostly because of Carlos’s CLASSIC
debate strategy of… Not engaging in the fucking debate?

was a DISTURBINGLY clear disconnect between what everyone else

why is everyone asking about it!?!?!”, even though literally nobody did. Nobody was asking about flight muscle groups. So I
changed up tactics after it was clear that a verbal debate was going nowhere
because everything was either (in his mind anyway) pre-explained or not worth
addressing.
I took
agreed upon estimates on weight and hypothesised wingspans for Velociraptor,
and ran a few calculations, all of which are available in page 4 of the topic
thread, but I’ll post the final diagram here for convenience (and, not gonna
lie, the jokes):

already explained everything” type response, or give some spiel that we’re
oblivious to the inevitable collapse of our server.Then out of fucking NOWHERE, he
starts accusing us of being cowards, racists and claims that we DOXXED HIM (!?!?!?)
(Hence the disclaimer earlier!) and threatens to have our server reported and
shut down. He then found his way onto my friend’s PRIVATE SERVER and lurked
around there for a bit, presumably hoping to stir up shit or find something

blog. To justify his edits, he’s attempted to use his own books (YES, BOOKS!
Notably, one NON-PEER REVIEWED book on volaticothere flight) as citations to support

sockpuppet accounts to get back in and either continue the edit war, or threaten
and harass people AGAIN before being banned AGAIN. At which point he claims
he’s being censored and that it’s some vast conspiracy against him.

it came to light that his books are loaded with artwork he has commissioned
from numerous online paleoartists, at least two of which (Sheather888 and
PLATOSPLEEN on DeviantArt are those I’m aware of) were either underpaid or not paid at all for their work,

course there was the whole GINORMOUS shitstorm that kicked off between Carlos

waited any longer to address, especially now that Paleofail’s ragequit the

I aim for this post to not only give me an opportunity to share my experiences with this particularly troublesome member of the online palaeontological community, but to serve as a compendium of his actions towards other members of this community, and most importantly, a warning. A warning to those that don’t know who he is yet, or
don’t know what’s been going down as of late. A warning to stay as far away
from this absolute psychopath as humanly possible.

community drama, content leaks, inter-site flame wars bla bla bla, another post for another day perhaps.
But in 2010, the faecal tornado sweeps in for the first time. Carlos Albuquerque appears in
the community for the first time, under the usernames Taniwha then Simoedosaurus.
Other
than generally being an ass towards other people in the community, when it came to my
modding team and I, he had one goal in mind:
He wanted us to make some kind of choristodere for ZT2, I vaguely recall it being a
Champsosaurus specifically. I really don’t care.
Why do
we know this? Because he would hound and harass us about it CONSTANTLY. We made
it absolutely clear to everyone that followed us that we already had a full list of about
50 animals planned, we had no time or space for new content, let alone content
that none of us really knew anything about at the time. So we shooed him off.
But he always kept coming back, harassing us, THREATENING US to make one
specifically for him.
The
community back then got tired of him harassing people and being a dick to others,
but the final nail in the coffin for him back in the day was when he shock
spammed my forum with pornographic
content. At the time, it was one of the biggest forums in the community as well. So he was swiftly banned from basically everywhere in the ZT2
community at the time, and that was the end of that…

not, because he ran away to DeviantArt, where he’s known rather widely among
the paleocommunity as JohnFaa (despite not using that old account for some time), and wrote a rather disturbing rape
fic about what had transpired:

all this drama kicking off on Tumblr, he’s made it a habit of accusing people
that stand against him as being either racist, homophobic neo-nazis or in
allegiance with neo-nazis, accusing people of doxxing him, threatening people
with law suits, claiming he’s got screenshots that support his narrative but
nobody else seems to have access to them.Classic Carlos behaviour witnessed

the amount of fucking BULLSHIT that’s happened as a direct result of Carlos’s actions

these events transpired, I didn’t really have much interest in being on Tumblr. Not really my scene, and I never got the hang of its UI. But in light of all this drama, I went and made a Tumblr account anyway, this Tumblr
account, to make this very post, which I’ve had planned to do for some time. Life
obviously got in the way, Christmas and all that shit, so I was going to save it
for the New Year. But a couple of tidbits came up that honestly could not have
waited any longer to address, especially now that Paleofail’s ragequit the
entire fiasco. Firstly, I got messaged about this:

actually know what to make of this. And neither does Sydney. Sydney thinks that
Carlos is accusing them of being my sockpuppet account. Which is fucking stupid
on Carlos’s part for a myriad of reasons that I would hope are obvious to
anyone that isn’t absolutely fucking demented. But the way it reads to me is
that Carlos has accused Sydney of making this account, MY account, as a
sockpuppet, on top of faking much of their real life. Which is also fucking stupid on
Carlos’s part for a myriad of reasons that I would hope are obvious to anyone
that isn’t absolutely demented. And also incredibly rich given that Carlos is
RENOWNED for making sockpuppets to harass people on Tumblr (as demonstrated
earlier) and to evade bans on Wikipedia.
As
another side note, no, I actually can’t see why the anti-flying volaticothere crowd
is seen as crazy, since it includes, what? Literally everyone on the fucking
internet that isn’t Carlos? Or is Carlos on some transcendent level of “woke”
that’s far beyond the comprehension of us mere mortals? Questions for later.
But the
other thing that came to my attention only today was this, and quite honestly,
this makes everything else I’ve said here today completely redundant:

Carlos Albuquerque is a known writer of paedophilic rape fics.
I
figured that back in the Velociraptor flight debate that he
must
be some sort
of troll. The way he’d post something so outlandishly obtuse with no logical
backing; the way he’d dodge and ignore arguments then cry out about doxxing or
cowardice when the debate turned against his favour; so many easily avoidable logical
fallacies, he must be trolling.
Surely,
he must be trolling.
At this
point, I honest to God hope so now. I hope that this is just an attempt at
trolling via shock value, as hypothesised by some already, because this is a

he’s “just” trolling or genuinely getting a sick kick out of it, he’s gone out
